This Age or That Age

Luke 20:27–44
Pastor Bobby Pell | NorthWoods Church

Introduction:
In Luke 20, Jesus is asked a theological question by the Sadducees—religious leaders who denied the resurrection. Their question wasn’t sincere. It was meant to trap Him. But Jesus, instead of taking the bait, offers a deeper answer—one that refocuses our hope from this age to that age—eternity.

The Sadducees' Trap:
The Sadducees presented a bizarre scenario involving marriage and resurrection. But their question revealed more about their hearts than their theology. Jesus points out their limited understanding of both Scripture and the power of God.

Jesus' Answer:
Jesus explains that in the resurrection, the next life won’t follow the rules of this one. There is no marriage in that age because our relationship with God will be full and complete. We’ll be like the angels—alive forever, children of the resurrection, and fully devoted to the Lord.

The Resurrection is Real:
Using the books the Sadducees accepted (the Pentateuch), Jesus refers to Moses and the burning bush. God says, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”—present tense. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.

Jesus Asks His Own Question:
After silencing His critics, Jesus poses a question: How can the Messiah be both David’s son and David’s Lord? Psalm 110 is the key—Jesus is not only in the line of David, but He is exalted above David, seated at the right hand of God.

Application – So What?
We live in this age, but our hope and identity are rooted in that age. Don’t interpret Scripture through a cultural, political, or personal lens. Instead, let Scripture shape your life with an eternal perspective.

  • Live courageously and faithfully in this age.

  • Remember your true citizenship is in heaven.

  • Keep your joy anchored in Christ—not in the temporary ups and downs of this world.

Conclusion:
Jesus reminds us that the resurrection is not just doctrine—it’s destiny. Our belief in the next life shapes how we live in this one. Will we live for this age, or for that age?
