Romans 1:18–23 teaches that humanity is deeply sinful and actively suppresses the truth about God. Although God has clearly revealed Himself through creation, people refuse to honor Him, turning instead to idolatry and self-worship. This rejection is not due to lack of evidence but a willful denial of what is already known. The passage contrasts God’s righteousness with His just, holy wrath against sin, showing that ignoring God leads to moral and spiritual corruption. The sermon emphasizes that understanding this “bad news” is necessary to appreciate the gospel, because only the gospel addresses humanity’s inability to fix its own sin problem.
